Black Bear with a Heart hand painted by Cathy Stevens Pratt

I have a pretty strong feeling that the animals of our world have no hopes to eat or harm us. Even big growling snuffling animals. Even the ones that are really big and have big teeth and big personalities. I have often thought that if we humans had more predators, then maybe we would have a bit more respect for our fellow creatures. A small bit of fear can lead to a small bit of respect.

These things I ponder while I work. Black bears are a part of this theory of mine. The black bears that live around me are big and gnarled and scarred up and in a certain frame of mind could be frightening run get the kid runnnnnn! But, if you educate yourself about black bears you’ll find they are afraid of us wee humans. They have the mindset of prey, the mindset of deer. Really. That’s what the scholars say.

Peace from the bears,

cathy
